A new report by the research firm McDowell Group is shedding light on seemingly contradictory North Slope employment figures and an apparent spike in nonresident hire.

North Slope employment dropped sharply in 2009 but has since rebounded and is now at an all-time high. Industry spending is up, but more money is being spent on maintenance. And the third-quarter 2010 spike in nonresident hire is not likely the start of a trend.

State lawmakers commissioned the study last year during the debate over Gov. Sean Parnell's oil tax proposal, House Bill 110. Supporters of tax cuts pointed to the jump

diesel should not be as high as it is. It's one reason the economy in the US is in the dumps. We need diesel here in the country. Preferably, home grown diesel...

A lot of business got nervous over the housing market and bail outs of banks and started laying people off making the recession much worse. Glad they are waking up and hiring again. It shouldn't have hurt the oil business much. However, I got a letter from a friend in England that said their economy is in the ditch and jobs are hard to find. He runs a garage vehicle repair that has kept him in good standing. He said, people are keeping their cars and repairing them rather than buying new ones. He said, diesel with taxes is about $7 a gallon.

Even if there is some advancement today, there is still a chance for problems. At least it is better than just sitting still and allowing the oil too also remain still.

Non-residents don't benefit from the tax shelter, unless they become permanent residents.
